St John's Market Shuts for Refurbishment
St John’s Market closed its doors to the public on Friday 10th June. This was after several years of difficult and sometimes fraught negotiations. MitE Coordinator, Rev. Jean Flood, has been Chaplain to the market for 12 years.
"Our much-loved Market has long been in need of a makeover and, hopefully, by the autumn the doors will be opened on a new era for traders and customers. Change is always painful and leaving behind the old market is certainly a wrench for traders and for me, their Chaplain. Some traders have had the business in their families for generations and have had to make the decision to close for good. Others will wait with apprehension to see what the new model will look like and how their business will progress there.
I hope to be there to meet them when they return.
Meanwhile I thank them for allowing me to be a part of the Market family, for their friendship, for the lovely gifts they gave me, for the great laughs we had.
I, for one, can’t wait until they’re back!!"
