A prayer for today...?

Blog by Emma Howarth, MitE Director of Operations

I was asked recently if MitE had a prayer. I hadn’t really thought about that before. The short answer was ‘No!’ but the correct answer was ‘No! But we should have!’

All our work as chaplains is rooted in prayer, whether personally by the chaplain or by a third party. We ask for prayer from our supporting home churches, we ask our Trustees to pray for us, we are included on church prayer cycles.

Prayer is our direct line to God. It is what helps to remind us that we are not doing this alone, and that we are not reliant on our own strength! We, as chaplains, will pray for others but do we take time to pray for ourselves?

The first chaplain, St Martin of Tours, only gave half of his cloak to the needy beggar (see Kieran’s blog 11th Nov 2019) as he still needed to look after his own welfare. So it should be as a chaplain - you need to take care of yourself as you give to others.

So here is the prayer for MitE Chaplaincy and the Chaplains. Please pray it!

Lord,

May we all be moved to be chaplains wherever You place us.

May we be your hands and feet,
bringing blessings to those we encounter
as we receive your blessings.

May we be your voice
as we speak into distress and chaos,
speaking for justice and love as you speak through us.

May our hearts be wholly yours,
loving all without exception as you love us.

Give us the faith to do what is just,
to show constant love,
and to live in humble fellowship with you, our God.

Amen
